Community-based medical cannabis dispensaries may be reducing the problematic use of pharmaceutical opiates...
- Phillippe Lucas, researcher at the Center For Addiction Resources
Phillippe Lucas, a researcher at the Center For Addiction Resources at the University of Victoria in Canada has just completed an important study. Lucas reviewed many studies taken from 1975 to the present on patients suffering with fibromyalgia, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathic pain. These patients were all prescribed a mixture of cannabis and opiates. His study concluded that marijuana is definitely an effective treatment for pain, and is safer than any opioid analgesic a doctor prescribes to a patient.
In his report, Lucas writes, “Research suggests that when used in conjunction with opiates, cannabinoids can lead to a greater cumulative relief of pain, which may in turn result in a reduction in the use of opiates (and associated side effects) by patients in a clinical setting… This may not only have a positive impact on patient pain levels and overall quality of life, but also on the overall morbidity and mortality associated with pharmaceutical opiates, and on the high levels of opiate addiction in both patients and the general population... Community-based medical cannabis dispensaries have proven successful at supplying patients with a safe source of cannabis within an environment conducive to healing, and may be reducing the problematic use of pharmaceutical opiates and other potentially harmful substances in their communities.”
Lucas also says that social and clinical research has proven the theory wrong that marijuana is a gateway drug to other substances.
In a review published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, Lucas states that traditional pharmacological pain treatments are not effective on a large group of patients who experience pain- and that marijuana is more effective among this group.
