Can Smoking Pot Help You Lose Weight?

" We found that cannabis users are less likely to be obese than non-users. "
- Dr. Yann Le Strat

Various studies have been proving that pot smokers are less likely to be obese. Yes, pot actually keeps off excess weight. One study conducted last year in the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that obesity rates in people who don’t smoke weed were between 22 and 25.3 percent while pot smokers who smoke at least three times a week had obesity rates of between 14.3 and 17.2 percent.

"Cannabis is supposed to increase appetite… We found that cannabis users are less likely to be obese than non-users. We were so surprised, we thought we had [made] a mistake," said the author of the study, Dr. Yann Le Strat, a psychiatrist at Louis-Mourier Hospital in France.

This week, British researchers claiming that pot does indeed have appetite suppressant qualities released a new report. But what about the munchies? Yes, I too am wondering the same thing. The explanation is this—there are two chemical compounds in pot (THCV and cannabidiol) that work together to suppress the appetite. The two compounds only work temporarily, however, which is why your munchies may hit you a while after you’ve smoked. There could be other factors that cause smokers to lose weight. "Maybe they're inclined to exercise more, be outdoors more, eat more fruits and vegetables. There could be all kinds of confounding factors that could make the results null and void," said Andrea Giancoli, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.

However these British scientists found that these two compounds in marijuana have an impact on the level of fat in the body and its response to insulin, a hormone that controls sugar levels in the blood. On experiments conducted on mice, the compounds boosted up their metabolism and cut down the amount of liver fat and blood cholesterol in their bloodstream.
