" As easy as renting a DVD from Redbox. "

Medical marijuana patients in Connecticut may soon be able to drive to their local vending machine to get their medical marijuana, just as easily as they would drive to their local Redbox machine to rent a DVD.

These Medbox vending machines are already popular in California. They do not accept cash. The purchasing process works like this: new patients receive a card that works like a key. They can load money onto that card so it acts just like a credit card. The second step in securing the process is fingerprinting. Patients must register their fingerprint with the company and provide it every time they make a purchase. The card, combined with the patient’s fingerprint, ensures that the patient is the only person with access to the machine.

On May 31st, Connecticut legalized medical marijuana, which prompted Kind Clinics, LLC, to bring their Medbox marijuana vending machines to the state. They introduced one machine on Tuesday in Hartford. The machine however, is not actually accessible as of yet. It is only on display in an empty storefront on Pratt street.

If the machines pass registration in Connecticut—which will definitely not happen before 2013—they will be kept in pharmacies behind the counter, as well as in clinics.

“You have a nice reception area and then you have a room where you’re buzzed into. And that is where the medicine in the machines are and either the patient or, in this case, the technician or the pharmacist will dispense the medicine,” says Kind Clinics CEO Dr. Bruce Bedrick.

These vending machines have the potential to be extremely successful, as they will greatly reduce the cost of operations for the vendor by reducing the amount of space and employees needed, as well as reducing possible internal theft.
