This film is the first to have ever been officially authorized by the Marley family, with many of his closest family members appearing in the film.
If you weren't a fan of Kevin Macdonald's before, you may become one now. The director of Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland, and My Enemy's Enemy has made a documentary film that is long overdue. Marley focuses on the real life of Reggae superstar, Robert Nesta Marley.
This film is the first to have ever been officially authorized by the Marley family, with many of his closest family members appearing in the film. It features rare interviews with his children, his wife, contemporaries like Jimmy Cliff, and unearthed archival footage of Bob himself. With Bob Marley's record label on board too, the soundtrack is an authentic parallel to his rise to fame.
Marley delves into a side of the proclaimed artist rarely seen by outsiders. It promises to reveal the deepest intimacies of Bob Marley's life, including the loss of his locks due to chemotherapy, the toll his infidelities took on Rita, and his early confusion due to his biracial heritage.
The film also examines Marley's well-documented relationship with cannabis. He never hid his usage, even when under pressure from record executives. It was a part of his spiritual practice, and this film portrays the true depth of his relationship with the plant. As his wife Rita says in the film, "The herb was like a sacramental food to us. We take it for reasons, not just to get high."
The doc premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February and is due for a North American nationwide release in April.
Until then, watch the extended trailer and get ready to fall in love with the enigmatic man and his music all over again.
