" Our sex was better because she seemed to enjoy it more. "

As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. So when Viagra came onto the market in 1998, it was widely believed that the women’s version might not be far behind. Thirteen years and lots of lab let-downs later, women are still waiting for their magic sex pill.

There is however a novel approach that could help: using Medical Marijuana to raise women’s libidos and heighten their sensual awareness. The link between marijuana and sexual arousal is not brand new. Heaps of ancient societies used it for exactly these purposes. Yet in today’s culture, marijuana use and women’s sexual satisfaction has received so little clinical study that no consistent information exists.

Jill Lopez is a newlywed who works in advertising sales. She also recently started a master’s degree program. The course load coupled with her regular work schedule has her feeling “stressed and tired.” That stress has overflowed into her sex life. Jill openly admits that using marijuana helps her feel less anxious about her day-to-day routine and increases her libido. “ I feel relaxed and stimulated at the same time,” she says.

In Miami, Florida, a women’s sexual health clinic has seen the number of their patients spike in the last few years. Brandy, a longtime nurse at the clinic, attributes this to greater life stressors and a more open dialogue about women’s sexual health.

“Most women come in saying they have a lack of sexual desire. Sexual dysfunction is a catch-all category and there isn’t a single reason or treatment that deals with it as a whole,“ says Brandy. “Stress, spousal conflicts, injury, childbirth, and experiencing pain during intercourse can all account for a woman feeling turned off.”

At the clinic, they treat in myriad of ways. From low dosages of male testosterone to physical therapy, and sometimes both. “Ultimately, there is no Viagra for women right now,” adds Brandy, “we often use alternative and combination therapies.”

Men have also come forward to suggest a link between marijuana and female arousal. Clark, a head shop owner, says that when his girlfriend Mia started her medical marijuana regimen, becoming aroused was a surprising side effect. “She got excited and, of course, I did too! Our sex was better because she seemed to enjoy it more.”

At a San Diego, California medical marijuana evaluation clinic, female sexual dysfunction is not an ailment marijuana has been prescribed for. The staff mention that there is not enough reliable information on it and currently, the seriousness of this condition is still under debate.

Unsurprisingly, the few medical studies that do exist on the subject of marijuana and sex are conflicting and mostly geared towards men and testosterone—which isn't all bad news for women since hormones play a significant part in female arousal as well as male.

Of course, there is no miracle cure for the delicate physical and emotional factors that attract women to men (or women to women). But for Jill, Mia, and possibly thousands of other women, medical marijuana works wonders in the bedroom.
