" Remo the Urban Grower wins big at Kush Cup, Vancouver 2012 "

Finally, a real MMJ event has returned to Vancouver, and boy, did the Kush Cup do it in style. This event set the bar high for patients and growers in Western Canada with an incredible grower competition and celebration of the medical marijuana community. All three days were capped off with incredible musical performances from The Rascalz, Swollen Members, and other prominent acts. Big Buds was there to capture it all, and we’ll be bringing you exclusive video footage and interviews from the event in the near future, but for now, here’s a recap of the first annual Kush Cup from Vancouver.

Day One started out with a large gathering of about 100 judges, each of whom received a sweet package of 15 individual grams of the best strains in Canada, a high-quality grinder, and a t-shirt. There were also samples available of many different edibles from s’mores to chocolate-caramel-peanut butter popcorn, as well as an absolutely delicious medicated piña colada.

On Day Two, the venue changed from downtown Vancouver to the harbor, as judges took a cruise out of Vancouver’s famed Granville Island. The setting was gorgeous, with a cloudless summer sky lighting a small portion of the Pacific Ocean called English Bay that pushes up to the base of alpine mountains, which are eye candy in the summer, but double as some of North America’s best ski and snowboarding destinations come winter. Again, there were a variety of edibles on hand, but the vast majority of judges were busy smoking up contestants’ submissions.

Day Three featured a hash making demonstration, a 4:20 laser show, and the moment everyone had been waiting for, the tallying of the votes coupled with an awards presentation. Remo the Urban Grower was the event’s biggest winner, taking to the stage three times to claim prizes, including first and second place in the indica category and a shared win in the extract category for Chives’ budder, which uses a mix of UG strains.

The other biggest winner was Rocky Mountain Kush, who took first place in the sativa category for his Chocolope, a 60/40 hybrid that is wildly popular in the Vancouver area, and notable for both its potency and its chocolate aroma. Jeftek’s Afghani Bullrider was another popular strain garnering much of the vote, and deservingly so.

Here is the list of winners in each of the Kush Cup’s three categories:

Best Extract:
1st place: Chives for his budder made from two Urban Grower strains, a mix of Rockstar and Blue Cheese.
2nd place: Rumpelstiltskin for his extract of Chocolope from Rocky Mountain Kush.
3rd place: Budder King

Best Sativa:
1st place: Chocolope by Rocky Mountain Kush
2nd place: Afghani Bullrider by Jeftek
3rd place: Congolese by Healing Tree

Best Indica:1st place: G13 crossed with Kush by Urban Grower
2nd place: Blackwater Kush by Urban Grower
3rd place: Real OG by Medicinal Gardens Co-Op

All in all, the Kush Cup 2012 was a rip-roaring success, including a strong display of community spirit along with some of the best medicinal strains in Canada. Next year’s event is now in the planning stages and the coordinators promise an even bigger and better weekend of MMJ judging and celebration. We’re looking forward to it already.
