Medical marijuana plants grown outdoors will produce enormous buds that, if you’re lucky, will need lots of support. This is a good problem. If you have buds that are so enormous your plant needs help to hold up all the weight you are doing something right. However, this is a “good” problem that you will need to address. Outdoor medical marijuana plants that go unsupported can become damaged. Branches can break, trunks can split, precious buds can droop to the ground where they lie helpless to invasive insects or excess moisture. The solution is support. There are a few methods growers use to ensure adequate support for their plants and the buds they bear.

Stakes

This method has been around forever, probably because it works, it’s simple and relatively inexpensive. The most common materials used are bamboo and plastic (although metal fence posts for larger plants are becoming more popular). I’ve seen a few guerrilla growers use sticks (with bark removed) from around their grow site to give a little support. Staking individual branches works great with smaller plants but the number of stakes required to support larger plants can become overwhelming.

Cages

As with staking, this method is best for small outdoor medical marijuana plants. Tomato cages or custom cages can be used to give a little support. It is generally best to have the cages placed over the plants prior to when you are actually going to use them to allow the plant to grow into them. This way you are just training the plant around the cage instead of forcing a cage over an already established plant.

Trellises

Trellising outdoor medical marijuana is by far my favorite support method. This is because of how diverse trellising is. You can get really creative with trellising. One technique is to stretch a trellis horizontally between fence posts or stakes. Place your plants in a row under the trellis. Train the plants as they grow through the trellis. Make sure the posts or stake you use can support the weight of the number of plants you choose to grow.

For large individual plants, a large trellis box can be created around them using four fence posts and some quality trellis netting. This method essentially allows the grower to build a giant tomato cage around even the largest of outdoor medical marijuana plants. Not only will this method offer support but it also offers a heightened control over the way your plant grows.

I’ve seen a number of different ways growers can use trellis netting to shape their gardens in ways you wouldn’t believe unless you saw it. One of my close friends uses trellis netting to control the height of his plants. He is able to hide his entire medical marijuana garden in the center of his vegetable garden with all his neighbors none the wiser.
