" Kelp is one of the oldest and most effective additives for growing. "

Kelp extracts are one of the oldest and most popular natural fertilizers. Kelp is an abundant source of minerals, trace elements and natural plant hormones, and provides a boost to any vegetative or early flowering medical marijuana garden. Some kelp formulations available on the market are less complex and derived from one specific type of kelp while others combine the advantages of kelp extracts with other supercharged organic compounds.

Maxicrop’s Liquid Seaweed - Maxicrop’s Liquid Seaweed is one of the oldest and most identifiable kelp extracts available to the hydroponic community. This is an effective and inexpensive way for beginner growers to start adding kelp to their fertilizer regiment. Maxicrop is extracted by heat and chemical processes which reduces the effectiveness of enzymes and plant hormones.

Biobizz’s Alg-A-Mic - Alg-A-Mic is a premier cold-processed seaweed extract. The cold processing maintains higher levels of hormones, vitamins and enzymes. Alg-A-Mic also contains high levels of naturally occurring amino acids and trace elements. Alg-A-Mic is extremely effective as a foliar treatment, but can also be used as a soil drench or as an additive to hydroponic solutions.

Advanced Nutrients’ Nirvana - Nirvana is one of my favorite organic supplements available to hydroponic growers. Nirvana contains high quality Ascophyllum Nodosum extract, which is chock full of hormones, vitamins, trace element and enzymes. As if this wasn’t enough, Advanced Nutrients decided to soup-up their kelp formula with alfalfa and hydrolyzed soy proteins. The alfalfa adds triacontanol, a molecule shown to increase a plant’s ability to absorb CO2. The hydrolyzed soy protein adds “L” form amino acids that are specific for boosting flower production. Nirvana also contains Chilean soap bark and yucca extracts. These extracts work as surfactants (wetting agents) and reduce the surface tension of the solution, which makes for faster and easier absorption.

Agri-Growth International’s Nitrozyme - Nitrozyme is extracted from Ascophyllum Nodosum in a process found to produce the highest levels of particular plant hormones (auxins, giberellins, ethylenes, and cytokinins) and micronutrients. The hormones found in Nitrozyme not only create vigorous vegetative growth but also reduce a number of different stresses that could be imposed on your medical marijuana plants. Nitrozyme contains 70 trace minerals, various natural hormones, and a wide array of vitamins.

Kelp formulations can be used by the medical marijuana grower in a number of different ways. The more basic formulas would be used in the vegetative stage only and primarily for foliar applications. The more complex and higher quality formulations can be used as a soil drench or additive to a hydroponic solution. These formulations not only invoke vigorous growth but also promote abundant flower production and reduce stress.
